For the first time, 30,000 lights have been placed throughout London's West End to commemorate the holy month of Ramadan.

"Happy Ramadan" lights up Coventry Street, which connects Leicester Square and Piccadilly.

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, who is one of the 1.3 million Muslims in London enjoying Ramadan, turned on the lights.

Aisha Desai, who was motivated by her love of Christmas lights, organised the show.

Ms Desai began the project three years ago.

"It looks incredible, I'm so overwhelmed with the response," she said.

"It's such an important month for Muslims.

"I wanted to raise that awareness as well to let our neighbours know that this is a really important month for us, it's my favourite month of the year and I'm just grateful that we're here today."

A public Iftar will be celebrated elsewhere in London at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, where there will also be a pop-up mosque and a Ramadan pavilion for Muslims and non-Muslims.

In a first for the team and a Premier League venue, the Chelsea football club will also host an open Iftar along the side of the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

The same will be done at Wembley Stadium later in the month.
