Get the Facts on the King's Coronation




Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce further details on the ceremonial, celebratory and community events that will take place over the Coronation Weekend between Saturday 6th and Monday 8th May 2023.

The monarch's coronation On Saturday, May 6, 2023, The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will be held at Westminster Abbey. 

The Archbishop of Canterbury will preside over the Service. 

As was previously said, the Service would be based on time-honored customs and pageantry while reflecting the Monarch's current function and looking to the future.

There will be more chances for people to gather together to commemorate the momentous event during Coronation Weekend. 

The BBC and BBC Studios will produce a spectacular Coronation Concert on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Windsor Castle. 

Several thousand pairs of tickets will be made available through a public ballot.

On the same day around the nation, The Coronation Big Lunch will be held, inviting neighbours and communities to enjoy food and fun. 

The Big Help Out, which will inspire individuals to try volunteering for themselves and join the effort being conducted to benefit their local regions, will take place on Monday, May 8, 2023. 

Members of the public are welcome to participate.

The Royal Highnesses The King and The Queen Consort hope that the Coronation Weekend will give people in the United Kingdom, the Realms, and the Commonwealth a chance to spend time and celebrate with friends, family, and communities. 

Their Majesties are excited to celebrate the event with the general public in 2023.

Saturday 6th May 2023


The Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey 

The Coronation Service will be held at Westminster Abbey on the morning of Saturday, May 6, 2023. 

The Coronation is both a sombre religious ceremony and a time for revelry and grandeur.

In what is referred to as "The King's Procession," Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort will make their way from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey.

Their Majesties will return to Buckingham Palace in a grander ceremonial procession called "The Coronation Procession" following the Service. 

Other Royal Family members will march beside Their Majesties in this procession.

The King and The Queen Consort will appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wrap up the day's formal ceremonies, joined by other members of the Royal Family.


 

Sunday 7th May 2023


The Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle

A spectacular Coronation Concert will be held at Windsor Castle on Sunday, May 7, 2023. 

The BBC and BBC Studios will produce, present, and broadcast live the Coronation Concert, which will unite legendary musicians with current A-list performers to commemorate the momentous occasion.

The concert, which will feature a world-class orchestra performing renditions of well-known songs and being attended by members of the general public as well as volunteers from The King and The Queen Consort's numerous charitable affiliations, will be fronted by some of the biggest performers in the world of entertainment and dancers. 

The performances will include a variety of spoken word segments presented by actors from theatre and screen, as well as staging and effects situated on the East Lawn of the Castle.

Several thousand people will be chosen to receive two complimentary tickets to the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle through a nationwide ballot conducted by the BBC.

The Coronation Choir will make an exclusive appearance on the show in addition to the concert's main performers. 

The nation's most passionate community choirs and amateur singers from all around the United Kingdom, including LGBTQ+ singing groups, NHS choirs, refugee choirs, and deaf signing choirs, will form this eclectic group. 

The experiences of the people who reflect the different faces and voices of the nation will be featured in a new documentary chronicling the formation of The Coronation Choir. 

The Virtual Choir, a group of singers from all throughout the Commonwealth, will perform in concert with The Coronation Choir that evening.

The Coronation Concert's centerpiece, "Lighting up the Nation," will unite the nation in celebration as famous sites all throughout the United Kingdom are illuminated with illuminations, lasers, drone displays, and projections.

The BBC Studios-produced Coronation Concert will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2, and BBC Sounds.

In due course, more information regarding the performance, the national ticket ballot, and the lineup will be made available.

The Coronation Big Lunch  

On Sunday, May 7, 2023, communities and neighbours all around the United Kingdom are invited to Coronation Big Lunches, a national celebration and deed of friendship. 

A Coronation Big Lunch takes the festivities to your area and is a terrific chance to get to know your neighbours further, whether over a cup of tea or at a street party.

The Big Lunch team at the Eden Project will oversee and coordinate the Coronation Big Lunch. 

The National Lottery made the Eden Project's vision of the Big Lunch possible, which annually draws millions of people together to foster a sense of community, combat loneliness, and assist charitable organisations. 

Since 2013, Her Majesty The Queen Consort has served as the Big Lunch's patron.

This May, thousands of events are anticipated to take place throughout the United Kingdom as people converge on their streets, gardens, parks, and public areas to celebrate the Coronation and commemorate this momentous milestone.

The Big Help Out

The Together Coalition, along with a variety of partners including The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service, and Christian organisations from all throughout the United Kingdom, will host The Big Help Out on Monday, May 8, 2023. 

The Big Help Out will draw attention to the beneficial effects that volunteering has on communities all over the country.

The Big Help Out will urge individuals to consider volunteering for themselves and join the work being done to support their local regions as an homage to His Majesty The King's public service. 

The Big Help Out seeks to use volunteering to unite local communities and leave a lasting legacy of volunteerism from the Coronation Weekend.
